We don’t remember the last time 121 started the first race of the season, but with fresh-painted topsides, it was a good look for Dave Bush-Brown and crew last night during Fleet 9’s Wednesday night opener. Ted Slee’s mighty Maverick (33) punched out ahead of the fleet on the tricky little Rose Island dogleg that Dr. Wallace set for the fleet of 13, starting close to the bridge in a southeasterly and heading up to the nun at Fort Adams.

With 8 or 9 knots facing to to 5 or 6 over the course of the race, the breeze trended south but there were big shifts and pressure differentials on the course. Often the breeze was stronger on the left but shifting right, and there was plenty of place changing on the racecourse. Maverick‘s lead didn’t hold up, and Dave ended up winning comfortably.

In our exclusive post-race interview, Dave revealed few of his secrets, but remembered to credit the talent of his crew for working him into the lead on the second lap. Also taking advantage of the shifty conditions was Robin Monk and the crew of 160, which moved up from a mid-fleet position, halfway up the first beat, to finished second for the night. Jamie Hilton’s 217 nabbed third place.
