Saturday turned out to be a tremendous day for racing a Shields (unlike many
of our Wednesday’s this season). After floating around an hour waiting for
wind, a steady 8-10 kt southerly began filling at 12:30, and our RC John Bonds
began racing at 1PM to let the boats get a feel for it. While most boats
tested the shore for current relief on the upwind legs, Charlie Shoemaker in
#245 played the shifts in the middle and end up walking away from the rest to
take first place. Jay Gowell #232 held off a stiff challenge from Wendy Lotz #138
and finished one point ahead to take second. The highlight of the event was
the finish of the second race, where the top six boats finished within four
boat lengths of each other (on the sixth place boat, we had a great view of
it…). All the participants enjoyed a Hawaiian BBQ after the race put on by
Coasters Harbor Navy Yacht Club that lasted until sunset. Thanks to everyone
who came out; it made for some intense competition.
