ORGANIZING AUTHORITY

IDA LEWIS YACHT CLUB

1. RULES

The sailing instructions for this series are the 2008 ILYC Shields Wednesday Night Series Sailing Instructions except as modified herein. Racing will be conducted in accordance with the RRS 2005-2008. The following rules will be changed: Rule 35 – Time Limit, 44.2 – TwoTurns Penalty, 62.1 (a) & Appendix A – Scoring. Boats shall conform to the Shields Class Rule. Spinnakers shall not be used during this series.

2. ADVERTISING

Advertising will be limited to Category A.

3. ELIGIBILITY & ENTRY FEE

Races are open to Shields Class boats. Skippers must be paid-up members of Fleet 9 and the Shields Class National Association. Boats shall carry liability insurance in the amount of at least $300,000 as a condition of entering any race. A copy of the insurance certificate shall be submitted with the entry form. Deadline for registration of all documents is noon each Wednesday to be scored the following weekend.

4. SCHEDULE

The series will consist of races to be conducted over four weekends during the course of the sailing season; no more than 3 races per day:

June 14 – August 9 – August 23 – Sept. 6.
The warning for the first race will be 1:00pm

5. STARTING AREA

Vicinity of South end of Rose Island or North of Bridge.

6. MEASUREMENT CERTIFICATE

In lieu of providing a Class Measurement certificate, the owner/skipper of each entered shall affirm that the boat conforms to the Shields Class Rules.

7. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

SI will be available from the Fleet Captain and at Ida Lewis Yacht Club prior to the first race.

8. COURSES

Will be chosen from the 2005-2008 South Bay chart published by SAIL NEWPORT except that if Flag “O” is flown on the Committee Boat before or with the warning signal, the marks of the course, the side on which they are to be left and the rounding order will be displayed on the Committee Boat.

9. SCORING

Scoring shall be in accordance with Appendix A – Low Point System except that at least two boats must start in order for a race to be scored. In order to qualify for a standing, a boat shall start in at least two thirds (rounded to the nearest whole number) of the completed races. Additional races may be used as throw-outs. If six races or less are sailed, there will be no throw-outs.

10. RADIO COMMUNICATIONS

Except in an emergency, boats shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones.

11. PROTESTS

Protests will be heard in accordance with the 2008 ILYC Shields Wednesday Night Sailing Instructions, except that protests will be heard at ILYC after racing on the following Wednesday evening.

12. PRIZES

There will be a prize for 1st place overall in the series.

13. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participating in these series of races do so entirely at their own risk. See Rule 4, Decision to race. The organizing authorities will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after racing.

14. NEWPORT AREA CAUTION

Competitors are reminded that Narragansett Bay is a restricted channel and sailing vessels do not have right of way over any vessel that may be restricted in her ability to maneuver. Competitors are also reminded of the restriction zone on the west side of the Navy Base and War College.back to top
